XKR: Pushing The Cat Back Into The Black

Jaguar has earlier unveiled its new XKR model which gets extra 120 horsepower compared to the XK model. The British car maker meticulously designed and manufactured the latest XKR to attain a powerful and posh vehicle without drilling a hole in the purchaser's pocket. XKR is also expected to push Jaguar to its original standing in the automotive arena at the same time recover from the losses it had previously experienced.

The new member of the Jaguar clan came from XK series. Said series, which is deemed as grand tourer, is composed of the XKR and XK8. It is produced to replace XJS. The power of said vehicle came from the automaker's DOHC V-8 engine with 4 valves per cylinder. Jaguar engineers say that the noise of the supercharger vehicle is reduced by 5 decibels. On the other hand, the intake noise is muted and the exhaust tuned. When idle, the engine exudes the aura of a V-8 however; when it is driven, it looks like an exotic Italian car combined with an American rugged vehicle.

From an angle, Jaguar XKR can be perceived as either a coupe or a convertible. It is neither flamboyant nor traditional. However, it has entertained modifications on Jaguar XKR air intake, aluminum-trimmed side gills, aluminum mesh grilles in front, black brake calipers, wheel option, quad-tip exhaust, 'R' badging, and lower rear fascia.

The latest version of the vehicle is powered by an enhanced Jaguar XKR steering system. The latter is the famed variable-ratio, electro-hydraulic Servotronic steering system, which has a speed-sensitive variable assist. It can be used in different driving conditions. Another powerful system incorporated to the supercharged XKR is CATS (Computer Active Technology Suspension). The latter has been tweaked by the car maker for enhanced reflexes. Hence, it can swiftly handle the shifting of driving from soft to firm.

The interior of XKR also entertained modest upgrades which include sport seats with more lateral support, aluminum-weave trim, standard DVD navigation system, climate control and more, to yield a more desirable vehicle.

Pontiac G6 Introduces New Body Styles for 2006

Produced by General Motors, Pontiac is a marque of automobiles that has been sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico since the year 1926 making it around eighty years - one of the longest brands to stay in the market. Looking at the General Motors line up, the Pontiac is a mid-level brand that features a more sporting, and performance-driving experience for a reasonable price. It also adds up a youthful feel to its advertising. In its history, it was introduced by GM as a lower-priced version of their Oakland Motor Car line.

In terms of its logo, the Pontiac logo was originally meant to represent an Indian, the Native American, arrow-head. One of the earliest slangs for this brand was to call it an Indian, which at present is still used by a couple hot rodders and enthusiasts. And one of the remarkable vehicles that bear this logo is the 2006 Pontiac G6 - a 2 or 4-door sports car, family sedan or sports sedan that can take up to five passengers. Made available in seven trims, this vehicle ranges from the 1 SV to the GTP sedan. It has a gas mileage of 23 mpg if you are looking at city driving, or 34 mpg if it means driving on the highway. It has a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Introduced in 2005, the Pontiac G6 was made to be seen as an all-new vehicle. And for sure, additional improvements have been done in to live up to its name. Two additional body styles joining the original sedan is the biggest change done to the Pontiac G6 for this year. Late last year, a two-door coupe made its way to the market, and this year 2006, a two-door convertible will be rolling off the highways. The Pontiac G6's convertible top is a two-piece clamshell design that drops cleanly into the trunk when lowered. Also added in is a new performance-oriented GTP trim level that includes a 240-horsepower V6, an available six-speed manual transmission, 18-inch wheels, and standard stability control. Also included in the list of changes done to this model are a standard power driver's seat, a new front-passenger detection system for airbag deployment, and a new three-spoke steering wheel design.

Auto Parts Discount gives owners a great collection of Pontiac parts like mirrors, catalytic converters, headlights, floor mats, and starters. Unlike other online stores, Auto Parts Discount gives each and every client excellent customer service and the finest quality Pontiac parts that only a Pontiac deserves.

For the 2006 Pontiac G6, advantages include three different body styles to choose from, a roomy interior, interesting features like the sedan's panoramic sunroof, and comfortable front seats. However, on the other hand, objections to this model includes the electric steering offers little feel for the road, lack of attention to details, unrefined suspension, and a nose-heavy handling. Standard features for the Pontiac G6 comprises of a trunk anti-trap device, front power vented disc and rear power 270-mm solid disc brakes, an AM/FM radio with seek/scan and 6 speakers, and a CD player. Options are side head curtain airbags and front side airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and an AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer.

50 Years of Power

A carryover from 2004, the 2005 Ford Thunderbird was the last of its kind to be manufactured. The last time it rolled off the Ford Motor Company's manufacturing plants was also the time of the vehicle's fiftieth anniversary.

This 2005 Ford Thunderbird is a luxury convertible that has been available in three trims that ranges from the Deluxe package to the 50th anniversary package. It has the capacity to take in a maximum of two passengers, and sports two doors. Also standard for this luxury convertible is a five-speed automatic transmission that has overdrive.

This last Thunderbird convertible to be produced still contains the cool and evocative styling that its descendants have bore. It also still holds its heritage of being a roadster with perennial style, loads of power, and great interior roominess and space. However, convertibles who have lived for fifty years also received changes so much so that the 2005 Ford Thunderbird sports an open-air driving, new colors for its interior and exterior, and a new aluminum trim for its doors and center stack.

As per the 2005 Ford Thunderbird's interior, this vehicle comes with air conditioning with dual-zone automatic climate controls, a power tilt/telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel that has radio controls mounted on it, a cruise control, leather upholstery on 6-way power bucket seats, power mirrors, window locks, door locks, a remote keyless entry system, AM/FM/CD with an in-dash 6-disc changer, a power convertible top, a universal garage door opener, and automatic headlights. As per safety and security, this luxury convertible has made sure that these features are not overlooked. The vehicle has front airbags, side airbags, and a combination of head-and-chest side airbags, thus making the 2005 Ford Thunderbird the first convertible manufactured by Ford to come equipped with this. Aside from that, the vehicle also has an anti-theft system, the Ford's Smart Locks system, the LATCH child seat system, a perimeter alarm that goes along with an LED indicator, and a glow-in-the-dark emergency trunk release handle.

And lastly, the 2005 Ford Thunderbird contains seatback map pockets for owner's use.

The Eos Convertible Is Like BMW 3 Series Made Simpler

Compared to ordinary cars, convertibles by far cost more especially when it is hard top models. The Volkswagen Eos 3.2L convertible is a fun and sporty car based on the Jetta platform. This sparkling silver test car looks cute, sporty, and delivers an especially handsome profile with the top down.

The Volkswagen Eos is like a BMW 3 Series made simple. The Eos 3.2 has a starting price of $36,850 and can reach $39,930 with addition of some option package. The top-level Eos features Volkswagen?s powerful 3.2-liter VR6 engine that pounds out 250 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque. Volkswagen?s 3.2L convertible is equipped with 18-inch Pirelli R-rated tires that provide the front-drive top-down with a ton of grip. The Eos' steering is accurate and feels extensive and purposeful. It also loosens up a bit at highway speeds caused by its electro-mechanical power unit with speed-sensitive assist.

Eos provides a sporty ride but not as extreme like any other German sport models. The multi-link rear suspension is responsible Eos firm handling. Braking is also reliable with its super four-wheel discs that clamp you down in a hurry. Anti-locks and stability system are also offered as standard features of the Eos.

The Eos is quite efficient when it comes to gas usage. The six-speed automatic shifts smoothly but aggressively when needed. Its EPA records 22 mpg for city driving while 29 mpg for highway driving.

To refrain from spending too much on your Eos go for a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder with turbocharger that cost $28,110 instead of spending over $40,000. For $28,110 you get a 200 horsepower that will shoot you up away from stops and zip you up to highway speeds. Its EPA rate is 23 mpg for city driving while 32 mpg for highway driving.

In terms of interior you will also get the same look and feel as that of the pricier model. There is also enough head and legroom in the front and moderate at the back. It can seat four people. It also has a classy and yet youthful looking interiors that come with gray leather sport seats and are offered as part of the $650 option package. These leather sport seats are well formed with very good side bolsters that would make you feel like a racer.

You will also love it because its top is hydraulically activated plus its has a giant built-in sunroof which is operated by small lever between the front seats, which makes the roof's front half slides up and back like a regular sunroof. And by pulling another small lever puts the whole roof down. The whole operation took about 20 seconds. The Eos is also equipped with high quality VW auto parts such as the popular vw belt which is renowned for quality and durability.

The dash is black with a leather texture. The nice brushed metal trim to accentuate the doors, center stack and air vents. Likewise, the lower half of the dash is a matching gray to the seats. Gauges are big and easy to read with big tach and speedometer next to the water and gas gauges and with a red digital readout dead center that includes outside thermometer, the radio, clock, odometers and trip computer. Everything was made more visible and Volkswagen takes it even further with the used of the indigo blue gauge backlighting that is perfect at night.

The Eos also has door locks, power windows, and mirrors plus automatic headlights. It has dual automatic climate controls that work well and its good sound system was fairly easy to tune. The test car added a navigation system costing $1,800 that includes a six-disc changer in the center armrest, a different locale.

Also standard in the Eos is a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and 12-way power front seats with multi-position lumbar support. The seats are heated and have five settings too. VW has loaded the Eos with a tire pressure sensor; side and curtain air bags; heated outside mirrors; and good overhead lighting.

And as part of the sport seat package, the test car has some toggles on the back of the wheel to enable manual shifting of gears with the tap of a finger. If there?s one thing that the Eos lacks, it?s probably trunk space, which is a meager 5.4 cubic feet. But in fairness to the Eos it can accommodate a small bag or a couple briefcases.

The Original: Porsche 365

Sold from 1948 through 1965, the Porsche 356 was Porsche's first production automobile. Although many think of the Porsche 64 as being the first automobile produced by the German company, the 64 was never mass-produced. It was only an operable concept car and testing platform for the company's design ideas. The 364, created by Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry Porsche, was designed by Erwin Komenda. Its engine features were derived from the Volkswagen Beetle, which was also designed by the senior Mr. Porsche.

Initially the models available were a coupe, cabriolet (luxury convertible) and a roadster (a stripped down convertible). The Porsche 356 underwent several changes before being withdrawn in 1965. The most sought-after variants of the car were the 356 Carrera (which often sold for over $150,000), the Super 90 and the famous Speedster. The original selling price for a Porsche was around $4,000 in the 1950s.

It was in 1954 that Max Hoffman, the only importer of Porsches into United States, told Porsche that he needed a lower cost, racier version of the 356 to entice the American driver. To this end the company created the 356 Speedster. It became a instant hit, featuring a low, raked windshield (easily removable for weekend racing), bucket seats, and minimal folding top. Today this car is still widely coveted and premium examples of the model have sold for over $100,000. It has also been used in several films, including 48 Hours, its sequel -- Another 48 Hours, and Top Gun. The production of Speedster peaked at 1,171 cars in 1957. It was replaced 1959 by the Convertible D model. This model featured a taller, more practical windshield, glass side windows, and more comfortable seats.

Even as the mechanical side of the Porsche improved year after year, the basic shape of Porsche 356 remained the same and was easily recognized. The last 356B Roadster was built in early 1963, but the coupe and cabriolet models were produced every year up to 1965. The final model built was the 356C, featuring disc brakes and the most powerful pushrod engine Porsche so far: the 95HP SC.

Porsche 356 production peaked at 14,151 cars in 1965, the same year that Porsche introduced the 911. The company continued to sell the 356C in North America through the end of 1965 as a lower-cost option to the higher-performance 911. When the customers continued to complain about the high the price of the 911, which was almost twice the price of the 356, Porsche started producing the 912. This car utilized the 356 engine and was sold between 1965 and 1969.

56 years after the beginning of its production, Sports Car International named the 356C as number ten on its list of Top Sports cars of the 60's. Having stood the test of time, the 356 is a well respected and coveted car among collectors today. Thousands of 356 owners worldwide maintain the tradition, preserving their cars and through them the legacy of Porsche engineering excellence.

Learn About Sports Cars Before You Buy One

Nothing beats the exhilaration brought about by speed. Anyone who has ever driven an automobile has at least dreamt of taking the role of Steve McQueen in Bullitt, getting into a high-speed car chase. If not Bullitt, each driver has dreamt playing Michael Caine's Charlie Cosker in The Italian Job, driving that gorgeous convertible into the very heart of the gold heist.. Anyone who has ever taken control of the wheel has at least once dreamt of driving not just to get from point A to point B but to go from point A to B in flair. And driving a fantastic sports car fulfills this dream.

In making an automobile or any land vehicle for that matter, a lot of factors are being considered: cost of material, safety, efficiency, and performance are only some of these at play on the drawing board of a car maker. A sports car however, in definition gives priority to performance above all other factors. By performance, speed is usually the first thing that comes to mind. Speed relies heavily on the power of the car's engine.

Most sports cars do have muscle engines which can outrun even the fastest sedans easily. A sports car engineer therefore puts it first on the list of factors that he has to consider: how to travel the distance with the least amount of time possible.

But of course, even if performance is a cut above every other consideration, the other factors are never neglected. Safety cannot be compromised, because even the fastest sports car needs a driver on the wheel at all times, and safe at all times. Besides, everyone wants to drive from start to finish in one piece, after all. So a performance-oriented vehicle must pay attention to the other factors and not rely solely on the car engine's power.

A number of sports cars compensate for a not-so-powerful engine with a light body, paying due respect to the laws of physics: the lighter the mass, the smaller amount of force required to move this mass. This is also the reason why a sports cars usually are smaller, and do not have backseats. If these cars do have backseats, these are not as convenient as a sedan's and is only a throwaway to please the insurance companies. One may also notice that a sports car quite often only has two doors, and it shares the same reason as that of the backseat.

Because it can outperform any of the regular four-seater cars out in the market, sports cars are sold obviously at a higher price. Another reason is because quality materials are almost always being used to withstand the heavier wear and tear in this type of vehicle. This also explains why purchasing a sports car remains a pipe dream to most car enthusiasts. But it doesn't have to be that way anymore. It is easier to get one's hands on the steering wheel of a sports car than most people think. One just has to have the imagination and acumen to do so.

Buying a sports car does not have to mean going to your nearest car dealer and getting a brand new vehicle off the rack. There are quite a handful of these vehicles beyond the dealer's garage, in very good condition and sold at a lower price. You can always check out car auctions and watch out of sports car models being sold at pancake rates. Pre-owned sports cars are always available on your local car magazine or website; sometimes it just requires you to pay more attention to these ad placements; you'll never know when the sports car of your dreams is right under your nose.

Buying second-hand sports cars maybe the best way to go if one is facing monetary constraints. If a pre-owned sports car is taken cared of properly, it will give one the same excitement that a new one can provide.

There are also private sellers particularly of sports cars. More often than not, owners of these sports cars found themselves short of cash and are willing to dispose of their sports cars at considerably low prices, much to their resistance. Desperation is in a way good for buyers on the look-out: they get their dream vehicles at bargain prices.

And once you have spotted the car of your dreams, it is wise to exercise routine vehicle inspection, the way one does when buying a regular car. Do not forget to visually inspect the engine, the interior and the body. It is a folly to disregard these simple reminders, especially when buying a pre-owned sports car. You as a buyer can easily assess the condition of the car, how well it was maintained by the owner, simply by looking at it. Then, the proof of the pudding is in the eating: do not forget to test-drive your prospect sports vehicle before closing the purchase. Give it a go and see how it feels. If it feels good ? and you feel like Steve McQueen in Bullitt ? it is time to call that sports car your own.

Cadillac XLR New Supercar

Clearly influenced by the styling the Mercedes-Benz SLK, the new Cadillac XLR shares the squared off look of other recent Cadillacs. It doesn?t look bad at all, although the headlamps look as if they have been squeezed to fit alongside the wide grille. The performance puts it up in the supercar class.

Top speed is limited to 155 mph, and it can get to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds ? that's slightly quicker than the Jaguar XK, thanks to the larger engine. Other competitors include the Mercedes-Benz SL and Porsche 911.

Looks can be deceiving. The car is wide and low, and looks big. In fact, it is quite compact, just 177.5 inches long and 72.2 inches wide. The car looks pretty good, particularly from the side. And you get a very practical SLK-lookalike opening roof. I guess most convertibles will be ?metal? convertibles soon, and the rag tops will disappear ? maybe not on all supercars. To save weight, the roof of the XLR is aluminum and magnesium.

Good power output

Also, the XLR has quite a lot of power: 326 bhp at 6,500 rpm and 312 lb ft (423 Nm)at 4,400 rpm from GM?s Northstar 4.6 liter V-8, which could work a bit harder ? 350-360 bhp, which would not be difficult to get from this engine, would make things more interesting.

As it is, it is enough to give the car quite a shove, and as the Northstar has an aluminum block and head with dohc and four valves per cylinder, it revs well. Variable valve timing improves the spread of power, too.

The engine is coupled to a rear mounted five-speed automatic transmission ? 5 speeds put it at a disadvantage against the European supercars which mostly have six-speed automatics, but it is designed to give sporty shifts. Because the box is rear-mounted and the engine is fairly well back, front/rear weight distribution is 50/50.

New frame concept

Based on GM?s new platform for sporty cars shared with the Corvette, the XLR has a fairly light frame of hydro-formed steel tubes. Hydroforming changes the shape quite dramatically, putting in bends, changing the section to a rectangle and so on, making a lightweight frame. The passenger compartment is aluminum, and the body panels are composite plastics. This is a structure that can compete with many a supercar.

This is a fairly light structure, and despite the high level of equipment, the car weighs a healthy 3,643 lb (1,654 kg) which is just 130 lb more than the new lightweight Jaguar XK, and of course quite a bit more than the Corvette which has a lower spec but bigger engine.

Double wishbone suspension

Suspension is the familiar Corvette design of double wishbones front and rear with transverse leaf springs. The result is a simple, lightweight system that gives more roll stiffness - resistance to roll - than coil springs. Also, the spring rate is progressive, so it irons out big bumps in the road almost as easily as little ones. There is also a front anti-roll bar.

To save weight, the double wishbones front and rear are aluminum; of course, the composite leaf springs are light, too. Leaf springs of this type - just one leaf - are actually quite advanced technology as they don't locate the wheels, and involve some clever manufacturing techniques.

The dampers are the new continuously variable electro-magnetic type, and the steering is speed sensitive, so you get more assistance at low speed.

As this is a Cadillac, it comes with a high specification. For Europe, navigation, and heated/cooled seats are standard as are adaptive speed control and a head-up display. The interior, with its wood, leather and aluminum trim is quite pleasant

On the road

Built in the same plant and to the same concept as the Corvette, the Cadillac XLR is best thought of a softened up Corvette intended for those who want a better ride.

Visibility is good thanks to slim pillars in the opening roof, and the almost flat hood. Like the Corvette both the instruments and driving position are good. There is also a head-up display which shows only the speed and which gear you're in, and you don't seem able to switch off. Pity. I did not find it useful.

The steering is not bad at all, and the XLR turns in well, as you'd expect with that weight distribution, but once you start pressing, you start to feel a little understeer coming in, which is not a bad thing for the market this is aimed at ? more the luxury sports car that the hard charging supercar driver. But the car does not corner as fast as you could with more neutral steering.

The automatic is good. In D, the performance is not bad at all, and the kick-down is quite aggressive. There's also a manual mode. Push the lever across to the left, and then nudge it forward for up, and back for down. This works extremely well, and actually is a manual. I mean, some of these actually shift up when you hit peak revs. Not this one; it just lets you stay there till you're ready.

Overall, the Cadillac XLR is a good addition to the ranks of sporty two-seater luxury cars, but not up to the standard of the Jaguar XK nor the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Others to consider include the more powerful and sportier Corvette and Viper SRT-10. Too new to rate is the Audi R8

Dodge Concept Cars For Auction

If you are one of those few who do live to search the world over for unique and one of a kind vehicles, then you might want to take part of this upcoming auction. You see, there would be a pair of Dodge Firearrow vehicles that would be put up for auction during the 36th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car event.

The 36th annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car event would be held on the 13th of the 21st of January come the following year. This is according to a statement that the organizers of the mentioned event released just last Friday. And as per the pair of Dodge Firearrow vehicles, it would be quite an interesting fact to know that these are actually concept cars and are convertibles. They have been built in the 1950s and they are the only ones that were built during that period that are still in a more than good condition. Sure enough, these vehicles would be in mint condition and will come still bearing the original Dodge parts that it was built with.

From 1953 up until the following year, 1954, the Dodge brand was able to create four of these Firearrow concept cars. Although these vehicles did not actually reach the production stage, they were mostly produced so as to be able to bring up the interest of the consumers. It was Virgil Exner who created the designs of these concept vehicles from Dodge. And according to the organizers of the event, the pair of Dodge Firearrow concept cars is the second and the fourth vehicles that were produced. The first and the third units are no longer around.

Organizers of the 36th Barrett-Jackson event say that for those who do not know what this vehicle is, the Dodge Firearrow II (the second one produced) is a roadster that is colored yellow. And as per the Dodge Firearrow IV (the fourth and last one produced) is a convertible that holds two seats. The latter also has roll up windows, a jump seat, a folding top, a full instrumentation panel and a radio.

One Great Looking Car from Volvo

One of the characteristics car buyer tends to look for in a car is its aesthetic value - the car has to look good both inside and out. A convertible has such characteristics and it commands attention wherever it goes. That is why the convertible is one of the most beautiful car designs ever.

But owning a convertible poses trouble to the owner for the security of the car is in jeopardy if the car employs a non-metal roof. Aside from that danger, the car is also susceptible to the elements - water can enter the vehicle if the top is not in its proper place due to faulty or not strong enough engineering of the mechanism and the roof itself.

But car companies are making advances in the design off their convertible and one of these car manufacturers is Volvo. The Sweden-based Ford Motor Company owned outfit has designed their Volvo C70 with a metal roof that solves both problems posed on convertible owners of the past. While they may be using metal for their roof they have come up with a way to keep the production cost at a minimum so that the car will not be out of reach of the majority of consumers. Volvo has produced a car that looks like a coupe from the outside and feels like one on the inside with the top down.

The design of the car enables the driver to tuck the top safely in the car's trunk in less than 30 seconds. Lowering of the top is a sight to see thanks to the perfectly engineered mechanism that allows the top to be tucked in to the trunk smoothly. Not only is the mechanism for lowering the top the clever thing that the design offers. Since the top takes up almost half of the space in the trunk of the car, putting something on the trunk may pose a problem or a bit of difficulty for some convertible with metal roof. But the Volvo C70 has solved that with a mechanism that allows the user to slightly raise the top to permit loading of luggage under it before the top is lowered again.

The exterior design is not the only good thing about this convertible for the Volvo C70 boasts of adequate legroom on its front seats. But the backseats are just like what you would expect from any four-upward-seater vehicle, they are best left to children or extra space for that extra luggage that would not fit in the trunk. The aesthetic value of the convertible is high and so is its performance level, it is equipped with an able engine and a wide array of parts that helps the engine perform at its peak. And it is just like the Volvo water pump that keeps water flowing through the cooling system to maintain the engine's normal operating temperature.

Since this four-seater convertible is a Volvo, you can expect the latest and the best safety systems to be integrated into the car. All in all, the Volvo C70 combines in great quantity high engine performance level, luxurious and comfortable interior, stunning looks and a host of safety features.

The 'Wow Factor' of Convertibles

Convertibles are on the rise again, says Jim Hall, analyst for automotive research firm AutoPacific Inc. of Tustin, California. This year's automakers sales reports are dominated by upgraded versions of small cars. Moreover, a sizeable market is reflected to have purchased not-so-costly convertibles with hardtops. These convertibles deliver an option to enjoy the fun of open-air driving and the security of the traditional cars especially during winter and rainy days.

If you're in Chicago, this is a fine car to drive in the wintertime, says Volkswagen spokesman Steve Keyes of his company's Eos. The convertibles that made a dramatic increase in sales include MX-5 Miata with power retractable hardtop, Pontiac G6 and Volvo C70.

Mazda Miata is one of the innovative convertibles that have triggered the crowd to press their purchase buttons. Mazda Miata parts which include the remarkable retractable power hardtop made the vehicle the new price leader of the year. When it arrived at the showrooms, its starting price was $24,945. That time, the lowest-priced convertible in United States was the 2-seater Mercedes-Benz SLK280. It was priced at $44,125.

Last year, less expensive power-operated hardtop convertibles are nowhere to be found. Nowadays, three out of nine convertible models with power hardtop have a base price of not more than $30,000. Another reason that triggered the mainstream demographics to purchase said convertibles is reduction of its parts. In the U.S., 40 convertible nameplates, softtop and hardtop went on sale. They have the starting prices not exceeding $33,000. The second lowest-priced hardtop was 2007 Volkswagen Eos which has a starting price of $28,620. Next to Eos comes 2007 Pontiac G6 which is priced at $29,150.

Automakers are taking into consideration this sweeping shift to stylish yet functional convertibles. Jace Stokes, Pontiac product manager, says The G6 convertible's appearance has drawn people into dealerships in areas of the country that have not traditionally been strong for Pontiac.

Auto Accident Child Safety

Travel Safely with Young Passengers in Your Car

The essential safety information for every parent, relative, friend, or caregiver, who may transport an infant or small child in an automobile is to be sure to get the right car seat for your child. When it comes to child restraint systems, one size does not fit all, and each system must be appropriate for the individual youngster's age, weight, and height.

The following are general guidelines about the kind of protection your child may need:

  • Infants up to about 1 year old should travel in a federally-approved infant safety seat that faces the rear of the car. Facing the back of the car protects a baby's fragile head and neck if a car accident occurs. The car seat should be semi-reclined so that the baby's head does not flop forward.
  • Children between 1 and 4 years old can sit in a convertible seat that faces forward, if the car seat is equipped with harness straps to securely hold the youngster in place.
  • A child who outgrows a convertible seat should ride in a booster seat, which will make the safety belt fit better and more comfortably.
  • After a child gets too big for a booster seat, he or she can wear a regular seat belt, but should continue to sit in the back seat until 12 years of age.
Give your child the maximum protection by using the car safety seat properly.

Although about 80% of drivers use child restraint systems, over 70% were incorrectly installed. The most common mistakes were incorrect use of the tethers and harnesses, which will keep the child safely secured in the event of an accident. This puts children at risk, and can easily be avoided, if drivers take the time to follow these simple steps:

  • Study the vehicle owner's manual and car seat instructions carefully.
  • Check to see if you need a special locking clip. Not all standard safety belts will secure a car seat without it.
  • Look for a car seat with a label saying it meets federal motor vehicle standards.
  • Send in the car seat registration card, so that you will get notice of product safety recalls.
  • Get a tight fit - the car seat should not move more than one inch from side to side or forward. To check for proper installation, push and pull on the car seat near the safety belt buckle.
  • Replace a car seat that has been in a crash.
